Need to know how to glue foam together? Check out the many uses of foam and learn which adhesive is right for the project. As a bonus, we’ll explain how to build a foam memory board.
Foam is a common material with a wide variety of uses – from construction sites to model making. Its unique physical properties offer many different application possibilities. Here’s a breakdown of the most common uses for foam.
Foam is commonly used in construction projects like foam board panels and insulation. To glue foam on a construction site, look for a specialized construction adhesive custom formulated for use on building foams.
Foams are found in indoor crafting projects like small scale modeling, seat cushions, furniture padding, memory boards, framed art, and much more.
Foams are highly popular in schools and offices. It’s common to find foam used in signage, presentations, displays, sculpting or sound proofing.
While the uses of foam are extensive, the list of compatible glues is not. Super glues aren’t formulated to grip foam, and epoxies are too rigid. The best glues to use on foam, both around the house and at work, are:
- contact adhesive – good for porous and non-porous surfaces, especially suited for difficult to bond materials. We recommend Pattex Contact Adhesive.
- all-purpose adhesive – good for a variety of projects and materials. We recommend Pattex Extreme Repair All Purpose Glue.
- spray adhesive – good for wide coverage over larger areas. Won’t bleed or curl papers.
Creating a memory board is the perfect way to add a personal touch to your walls. A well-made memory board can display family pictures, notes, and other important papers in your household.
How to glue foam into a memory board – here’s what you need:
- Pattex Extreme Repair All Purpose Glue
- foam board
- thin sheet of plywood (matching the size of the foam board)
- fabric (to cover the board)
- pencil
- ruler
- scissors
- ribbon
- jewels, tacks or other accent pieces like .
Here’s how to glue a foam board together for a memory board.
- Decide on the size of your memory board and, if necessary, cut the plywood and foam board to size.
- Apply glue to the plywood in lines.
- Attach the foam board to the plywood, align the edges and press the entire surface down firmly.
- Measure and mark the cover fabric to fit the board. Leave roughly a 5cm diameter of fabric to wrap around the back of the board.
- Place the glued board on top of the fabric (foam side down) and wrap the board like a present. This is to pre-fit the fabric.
- Unfold the fabric, and apply glue to the back of the board along the edges.
- Wrap the fabric back onto the board and push into the adhesive bead. Pull the fabric taut so it doesn’t slump.
- Leave the board to dry.
And voilà! A beautiful new memory board for your room. You can add decorative accents to the front if you wish. Hang it with the Pattex No More Nails Removable Mounting Strips that’s compatible with the weight of the board.
