Removing glue from concrete is easier than you think. In this guide we’ll show you how to get glue off concrete step by step, both before and after the adhesive cures.

How to get glue off concrete: The basics

These things happen – even if you’re careful, you can still end up with a glue stain. Perhaps you squeeze out a bit too much and get glue on the floor or work surface. Or perhaps you find yourself dealing with an old glue stain from previous work.

Required materials

Removing glue from concrete can seem particularly challenging, especially if the glue has already dried. But no matter how big the spill, or how old the stain, there are ways to get rid of it.

Some faint traces of glue may remain afterwards, since concrete is a porous material, absorbing adhesive easily. However, you can tackle the worst of the stain: In the following sections, we’ll show you exactly how to remove glue from concrete. The method you use will depend on the state of the glue – whether it has cured.

Expert Tip

Removing adhesive from concrete: Before the glue cures

The trick to removing adhesive from concrete is to act fast – ideally, right after spilling the glue, so you can clean it up before it cures. Wet adhesive is much easier to remove than glue that’s already dried. To clean up epoxy before it sets, use acetone. For most other adhesives, you can use acetone or mineral spirits.

Here’s how to get glue off concrete quickly, assuming the adhesive is still wet:

  1. Take safety precautions. When working with adhesives or solvents, always make sure the room is well-ventilated. Ideally wear gloves to protect your hands.
  2. Test the solvent. If you’re using a strong solvent like acetone, test a small amount on the concrete surface first. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the adhesive to ensure the solvent is suitable.
  3. Remove the glue from the concrete. Using a cloth soaked in the solvent, wipe off the glue.
  4. Clean up. Clean the concrete surface with soap and water and wash your hands thoroughly.

How to remove glue from concrete: After the glue cures

So, how to get glue off concrete once it’s already dried? In this case, glue removal takes a little more time and involves a couple of extra steps, but don’t worry – it can be done!

The process will depend on the kind of glue. Adhesives like mastic can usually be removed with water and a scraping tool. For many adhesives, however, you’ll probably need to apply a solvent after scraping or sanding the glue stain.

When you’re removing glue from concrete, follow these steps to get rid of cured adhesive:

  1. Safety first. Keep the space well-ventilated, and wear gloves and goggles.
  2. Scrape or sand the glue stain. Use a hand scraper or sandpaper to begin with. If this isn’t enough, try using a more powerful tool such as a power scraper.
  3. Clean up the residue. Dispose of any residue that you manage to remove.
  4. Soften the adhesive. If the glue stain is still visible after scraping or sanding, try softening the adhesive with a solvent. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for the adhesive for information about what kind of solvent is most effective. For instance, acetone, mineral spirits and paint stripper are commonly used for glue removal, while for some kinds of glue, warm water may be enough.
  5. Test the solvent. Apply some solvent to a small area to check its compatibility.
  6. Apply the solvent to the stain. Use a cloth to apply the solvent to the stain and leave for several minutes, until the glue has softened. If you’re dealing with a large glue stain, work methodically, focusing on one small area at a time. This way the glue and solvent are less likely to dry during the removal process.
  7. Scrape off the glue. Use a scraping tool to remove any remaining glue.
  8. Clean up. Use a cloth soaked in soapy water to clean the concrete surface. Then wash your hands.

Unfortunately, as concrete is porous, it may not be possible to remove all the glue from the surface. But using these techniques, you should be able to get rid of the bulk of the stain, so the glue is less visible.

Whether you’re removing adhesive from concrete or any other material, there’s always a solution – and it’s usually simpler than you think.
