Not sure how to glue plastic together? We’re here to help. Our guide recommends the best adhesive to use and shows you how to glue plastic effectively.
From polycarbonate to polyethylene, there are many different types of plastic. So, when it comes to DIY repairs you may not know where to begin. Which glue to choose?
First, think carefully about your project and the materials you need to bond. The best way to glue plastic together will depend on which kind of plastic you’re working with as well as the object you’re repairing.
Let’s say you’re working on a heavy-duty project where the plastic will be exposed to pressure, water, high temperatures, or other challenging conditions. In that case, use a construction adhesive – a high-strength glue that meets these requirements.
When it comes to repairing PVC pipes, on the other hand, look out for a specific adhesive – a product that mentions PVC on the packaging.
However, for most plastic repairs – quick fixes around the house – you can use a super glue. Ideally, try to identify the kind of plastic first, and make sure it isn’t a “tricky” plastic like polyethylene or polypropylene.
Most plastics can be glued together quickly using a premium super glue like Pattex Super Glue Ultra Gel. This high-strength adhesive is easy to use and perfect for carrying out small repairs to household objects such as toys or decorations.
Next, we’ll show you how to glue plastic to plastic with super glue, step by step.
Super glue is recommended for use on hard plastics, including acrylic, polycarbonate and polystyrene.
Some objects will have a recycling symbol (a small triangle), either on the packaging or on the object itself. You can check the meaning of the number or letters online. For instance, if you see the number “7” printed, the object is likely to be acrylic or polycarbonate. In this case, it’s compatible with super glue. If in doubt, we recommend opting for a specialty plastic adhesive rather than a super glue.
Once you’re sure the object can be bonded with super glue, you’re ready to start. Choose a high-quality super glue from a trusted brand, like Pattex Super Glue Ultra Gel. This adhesive is strong, flexible, resistant, and easy to use. The special non-drip formula means you can apply it with precision – no need to worry about making a mess!
Next, we’ll look at how to glue hard plastic together in detail.
Before you start, remember to take safety precautions. Ensure the space is well-ventilated and ideally wear gloves.
- Prepare. Cover the work surface with paper. The plastic surfaces must be clean and dry. You can use sandpaper to roughen the surface, as this helps to improve adhesion. Pre-fit the parts, checking that they fit together snugly.
- Apply the glue. Dispense a small amount of super glue onto one of the plastic surfaces.
- Press the surfaces together. As soon as you’ve applied the glue, press the surfaces together and hold them for about 30 seconds.
- Wait for the glue to dry. Super glue usually takes about 10 minutes to dry. However, for best results leave the object overnight, to give the glue time to reach maximum strength.
- Clean up. Remove excess adhesive with a tissue while it’s still wet. Once the glue has dried, it can be carefully removed with a blade or acetone. Be aware that acetone can cause discolouration.
That’s everything you need to know about how to stick plastic together with super glue. So, get your glue, then get to work!
