How to get super glue off metal: The basics

So, how to remove super glue from metal? Where to begin?

Cleaning super glue off a metal surface may seem like a challenge. Super glue is a high strength adhesive, while metal is a tough material – an apparently tricky combination. Luckily, super glue removal is an easy, straightforward job. And there’s more good news – you probably already have everything you need.

Required materials

Check that you have the following materials:

  • acetone (commonly found in nail polish remover)
  • cotton balls
  • a scraping tool or razor blade
  • sponge
  • clean cloth
  • rubber gloves

If you don’t have acetone to hand, don’t worry. While it’s very effective for glue removal, it’s not your only option. In the next section, we’ll also show you how to get super glue off metal without acetone, using white vinegar as a substitute.

How to remove super glue from metal: Step-by-step

Now that you’ve got your materials, you’re ready to get rid of that glue stain. Remember to work in a well-ventilated space, and preferably wear rubber gloves when using acetone.

Here’s how to get super glue off metal, with or without acetone.

  1. Prepare the surface. Make sure the metal is clean and dry.
  2. Apply the acetone. Soak a cotton ball in acetone and press it against the glue stain for 5-10 minutes. The glue should become softer.
  3. Alternatively, apply another solvent. If you don’t have acetone, you can use white vinegar. Soak a cotton ball in it and keep it pressed against the glue stain for up to an hour. White vinegar isn’t as strong as acetone, so it’ll take longer to soften the glue.
  4. Remove the glue. Use a scraping tool or razor blade to carefully scrape the glue off the metal. If necessary, repeat the steps above to remove all the glue.
  5. Clean and dry the surface. Afterwards, clean the surface using a sponge or cloth and warm soapy water. Wipe it dry with a cloth.

Once you know how to remove super glue from metal, you can also remove glue easily from other surfaces. Acetone is effective on glass, plastic, and many other materials. Just keep in mind that it can cause discolouration. For that reason, test the acetone on a small, hidden area first.
