How to do wall paneling: What you need to know

Wall paneling is a popular way to decorate a room, adding subtle visual appeal. Traditionally, wainscot panelling had a practical purpose, insulating rooms and keeping out the damp. It also protected the walls from stains and scuff marks. These days, however, wall paneling is mostly decorative.

If you’re wondering how to install wall paneling, we’ve got some good news for you – it’s something you can easily do yourself, without professional help. In the following sections, we’ll show you how to do wall paneling properly. But before you start installing the panels, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Height – Traditionally, wall paneling is supposed to stop at the chair rail (no more than 1/3 of the height of the room).
  • Matching colours – There are lots of colours and materials to choose from, but make sure you pick panels that match the colour of the trim in the room.
  • Room size – To make a room look bigger, use light colours and short wall paneling. If you use dark colours and long wall paneling, the room will appear smaller.

How to make wall paneling: Choosing a glue

So, how to install wall paneling over drywall? A strong construction adhesive should be sufficient to keep the panels in place.

When you’re choosing an adhesive for wall paneling, make sure you pick one that’s compatible with the material of the panel, whether that’s wood, tile, plastic or particle board. Ideally, look for a product that’s specifically labelled as “panelling adhesive” or something similar.

It’s also a good idea to pick an adhesive with gap-filling properties, especially if you’re dealing with uneven walls or flooring, or installing the wall paneling on drywall.

How to put up wall paneling: Step by step

Having chosen your wall paneling panels and a suitable glue, you’re almost ready to get started. We recommend painting or staining the panels before installation, as this will make it easier to cover all the edges.

Next, here’s how to install wall paneling:

  1. Prepare the walls. Measure and mark the areas where you plan to install the wall paneling. Make a note of skirting boards, chair rails, door frames, and any electrical sockets.
  2. Cut the wall paneling. Use a handsaw or circular saw to cut the panels, then a jig saw, or keyhole saw to cut any necessary holes. Pre-fit the panels.
  3. Prepare the surfaces. Both the walls and the wall paneling should be completely clean and dry.
  4. Apply the construction adhesive. Apply the glue in vertical lines on the back of the panel. The lines of glue should be about 10 cm apart from each other, and approximately 5 cm away from the edge.
  5. Attach the panel. Turn the board over and press it firmly into place on the wall, using the pre-marked lines.
  6. Repeat the process. Install the remaining panels.
  7. Attach skirting boards and chair rails. Use adhesive to attach these parts to the top and bottom of the wall paneling panels.
  8. Seal the gaps between the wall paneling and the wall or floor. Use a good quality caulk or sealant.

While sealing may seem optional, don’t skip this step – it will help to keep the wall paneling in good condition for years to come.
