How to install beadboard: Getting started

To add instant character to a home, there’s nothing quite like beadboard. This kind of panelling is often used in kitchens and bathrooms, but you can install it anywhere you like, from bedroom walls to living room ceiling. It can also be used as wall panelling.

Wherever you use it, beadboard helps to create a cosy, traditional aesthetic. In addition, it’s inexpensive and easy to install. So instead of hiring a professional, why not do it yourself?

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to install beadboard panelling over drywall. But before you get to the installation stage, here’s what you need to do in preparation.

  1. Prepare the walls. Measure and mark the areas on the wall where you plan to install the beadboard. Make a note of skirting boards, electrical sockets, and door frames, as you may need to cut holes in the beadboard.
  2. Make additional markings if you’re using the beadboard for wall panelling. The chair rail and skirting boards should also be measured and marked.
  3. Check whether the floor and walls are uneven. If so, take this into account when cutting and pre-fitting the beadboard.
  4. Cut the beadboard. Use a saw (such as a table saw) to cut the pieces of beadboard.
  5. Pre-fit the parts. Check that you’re happy with the positioning.
  6. Paint or stain the beadboard. Do this before installation.

Finally, a note on beadboard height. Panels usually have a height of 8 feet, as they’re designed for standard rooms. If you’re using the beadboard as wall panelling, the panels will need to be cut to a smaller size – about 1/3 of the room height (around 32 inches).

How to install panelling: Choosing a glue

So, you’ve learned the basics of how to install panelling, but you may be wondering – which glue to use?

To get the best results, choose your adhesive carefully. Look for a strong, high quality construction adhesive which is designed for use on beadboard. The word “panelling” or “beadboard” should be mentioned somewhere on the label, or in the manufacturer’s instructions. In addition, double check that the adhesive is compatible with the materials you’re working with.

We also recommend choosing a paintable adhesive that has gap-filling properties. That way, you can achieve a perfect, professional finish.
